New web site
The beginning: 20090830
Here's a lttile something to look at. There isn't much content yet, but the idea here is that many people can post thoughts, sightings, pictures, and data. We can use this site as an online resource for our volunteers and other folks involved in habitat creation and restoration. There will be image galleries that you can upload your pictures to, a forum for open discussions, and a calendar for our workday and event schedule, Volunteers and monitors can even have their own blogs.
This application - and that's what the site is, a web application that stores almost all of the content in an enterprise-grade catabase - is also EXTREMELY customizable. So much so that it presents its own set of issues, so that down the line we'll be looking for one or two people who can fulfill an administrator role, and be responsible for handling more technical issues, like updates and database backups, when I can't easily do that.
We're also looking for an additional editor or two, people who have writing skills and can make good judgments concerning uploaded content. These people will have permission to edit anything submitted for publication on the site, to remove inappropriate posts, and to handle some other creative functions.
For those who'd like to publish stories and other content (like photos) regualrly, we have "contributor" roles. This gives one a lot of freedom to post large amounts of data, and to be able to create, edit and delete those posts at will.
Anyone who registers can leave comments for all to see. although while the site is on this test server, the number of users will need to be somewhat limited. Perhaps we'll sat it up so that these users can even publish stories - with photos or illustations if desired - on the site. Have no fear, though. When the site finally goes live at www.jarvissanctuary.org, all the data that's on this site will appear on the new one. Ah, the wonders of technology....

So please feel free to register, there's no cost or obligation. Just enjoy the site and help make it one of the best "nature site" web sites on the web!
